Prime Festivals of Shree Jagannath Temple

Rath Yatra

After the Ratha Yatra at Puri, the temple is known for its yearly chariot festival, named Rath Yatra, which is the third most significant and largest. Hence the festival named Rath Yatra held every year on the second day (waxing phase of the Moon) of Ashadha month. According to the age-old tradition and ritual, elephants are given the first priority in bowing before the Holy Deity Lord Jagannath. Later, the Chief Minister of Gujarat inaugurates the ‘Rath Yatra’ parade by cleansing the road for the Lord Jagannath’s Chariot.

At a distance of around fourteen kilometres, the ‘Ratha Yatra’ procession passes through almost every city across Gujarat. The parade culminates at Saraspur, where local inhabitants distribute ‘Mahabhoj’ to the worshippers who have joined the procession. The ‘Ratha Yatra’ is celebrated as a ‘Lokotsav,’ or public celebration, by the Gujarati people. When compared to comparable festivities in Kolkata and Puri, the Ahmedabad ‘Rath Yatra’ is said to be one of the biggest ‘Rath Yatra’ festivals.

Jalayatra

Lord Jagannath’s Jalayatra to the Sabarmati river arrives with a procession on Jyetha Shukala Purnima and performs the Ganga-Poojan return with vessels of water for the Abhishek to Lord Jagannath. The Lord is sent to His maternal uncle’s residence after completing the Shodashopachar Poojan Vidhi by singing vedic mantras.

Rudra Abhishek

Rudra Abhishek is conducted throughout the month of Shravan, with 1,25,000 clay Shiva Linga worshipped on the New Moon Day. This is referred to as the “Parthiv Pooja.”

Hindola Darshan

This celebration begins on Shravan Shukla Tritiya and lasts until the full moon day. The festival’s origins may be traced back to Lord Jagannath’s taking his sister Goddess Subhadra with him on Rathayatra day, which irritated his consort Goddess Rukhmani (Lakshmiji). Thus goddess Lakshmi is pacified.
